While most people are familiar with the DL&W Newark Broad Street Station, a little further south there is a lesser-known station that served downtown Newark. The Broad Street Station was built for the New Jersey Central Railroad in 1917 and served as the western terminal of the Newark and New York Branch. It was used up until 1967 when the Aldene Plan diverted all CNJ trains into Newark Penn Station and the eastern terminal of this branch, Communipaw Avenue Station, was closed as well. It has been vacant since then and the Prudential Center has been built where the train sheds and platforms once stood. At one point, this structure was to be incorporated as the Broad Street entrance to the Prudential Center but that did not come to pass. It still sits vacant to this day as it was on the day I took this photograph on 12.06.08.
