I found this vintage CNJ boxcar somewhere in South Jersey in a place one wouldn't think to look for anything railroad related. It turns out that, at one point, this was the southernmost termination point of the Central Railroad of New Jersey. This boxcar stands in what was once a large rail yard that served the booming oyster industry in this area. Boxcars like this one, built in 1916, would be filled with oysters and sent north on what was called the, "Oyster Train". The business was booming and multiple boxcars would be pulled by steam engines to points north as Philadelphia and New York. Unfortunately, trucks took over this business and the oyster trains never lasted past the steam age. All train service ended in 1950 and all trackage pulled up. Now, all that remains is this boxcar on a little piece of rail in a section of Port Norris, NJ called, "Bivalve".
